I’m writing a book!

Unmasking: Toward Authentic Masculinity

I’m writing a book based on my 20-year research project on men’s gender identity development. My goal for the book is to share through research and stories how external expectations socialize men, the processes of masking and becoming, and how we can create change in ourselves, our relationships, and the world. Here’s a sneak peek at the new table of contents.

  1. Introduction
  2. What Is a Man?
  3. Expectations of Men
  4. Why Wear Masks?
  5. Wearing Masks
  6. Consequences
  7. Unmasking
  8. Becoming
  9. Exploring Identity
  10. Practicing Integrity
  11. Engaging Men
  12. Creating Change

The Process

I have completed and submitted a full draft of all 12 chapters of the book. I’ll spend the next week or so doing some fine-tuning with my developmental editor. In late October, it will go to a new editor who will give it a fresh and cold read. From there I will work with a revisions editor to identify the most significant improvements and make them.

Since I have not been writing this book for the past 15 years, It is exciting to see progress. I participated in the Creator Institute‘s community-powered course since early June. Based on the progress so far, New Degree Press has given me the green light to sign a contract to publish the book in May 2023. If you have written a book and have tips and suggestions, please send them my way.
