For many people, the words strategic planning conjure up feelings of dread — another retreat, another long document that no one will read, another process that produces little impact.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
When done well, strategic planning can be energizing. It can be a space for learning, connection, clarity, and focus. I call my approach Envisioning because that’s what it’s really about: getting clear on your aims and aligning your actions to get there.
“Vision without action is just a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.” – Nelson Mandela
That’s the goal of Envisioning — to align your clarified vision with your actions.
Why You Do Not Want an Industry Expert
A common misconception is that organizations need to bring in an expert from their field to tell them what their plan should be. You already have the expertise. You know your history, your people, your context, your constraints, and your potential.
You don’t need someone to tell you what to think. You might need someone to help you think — to facilitate the conversations, sort through the many different ideas, bring things into focus, and arrive at the clarity you need to move forward.
This is what I do. I help organizations unlock their wisdom, experience, and knowing and turn it into direction, alignment, and shared accountability.
Three Core Components of Envisioning
- Clarify Vision, Mission, and Values
We start by grounding the organization in who you are and what matters. That doesn’t mean a full-day retreat that produces a word salad no one ever reads again. It means co-creating a brief, clear, and meaningful vision, mission, and values statement that actually guides daily decisions.- Vision: Your big picture and long-term aspiration
- Mission: How you’ll operate toward that vision
- Values: What you will not compromise
- Define Goals and Outcomes
Once the foundation is clear, we identify 3–5 strategic goals. These are your big priorities. From there, each goal is broken down into tangible, measurable outcomes. The result is a clear one-pager: a map of what matters most and how you’ll know you’re making progress. - Create a Living Implementation Plan
This is where vision meets execution. We build a structure that includes ownership, timelines, updates, and a rhythm for accountability. This becomes a working document — updated regularly — that helps you stay focused and responsive as circumstances evolve.
The Power of Clarity and Alignment
At the heart of this approach is a simple but powerful concept:
Clarify your aims and align your actions.
So often, strategic plans feel disconnected from day-to-day work. But when your vision and values are collectively clear, your goals are aligned, and your implementation plan is active, your team gains direction, focus, and accountability.
Whether it’s a one-day session or a six-month iterative process, I tailor each engagement to fit the organization’s needs. We may do some or all of these aspects. We may work with the staff, the board, or both.
What matters most is that the plan serves you, not the other way around.
If your organization is ready to move from reacting to leading — from feeling stuck to moving forward in this VUCA world— let’s talk. Envisioning might be the right step for turning your aspirations into aligned action.
