A Year In: A Curricular Approach Beyond the Launch

Last week I spent time on campus with a team I helped launch their curricular approach with about a year ago. I led a workshop, and we spent the day sharing showcases, consultations, and real conversations about where they are now and where they are headed. It was a reminder of how much things can shift in a year.

Like most campus launches, a year ago, they were focused on the big picture and their learning aims. A year later, they are now focused on Educational Plans, aligning their day-to-day and integrating it into the student experience. The insights and possibilities they were naming in the room were ones they had not even fully seen yet until they were all together.

About a year in, alignment starts to become visible. Offices stop quietly competing for the same 10% of students who show up to everything and start asking how to reach every student together. When a student encounters the same message around self-awareness on a bulletin board, in a conduct meeting, in a newsletter, and in a counseling center display, something starts to happen. It begins to sing. Students notice it and start talking about it when the staff are not even in the room. This is also where redundancy dissolves. One practical example this campus was beginning to ideate around: instead of twelve office newsletters students ignore, what about a single aligned newsletter they might read. Less noise, more impact, and real savings in staff and student time.

Not only were they aligned with each other, but they were also beginning to integrate into the student experience. Instead of asking students to navigate our bureaucracy, we start organizing our work around how students actually experience campus. Rather than pulling students into a workshop on Sunday night at 7 pm, we ask where they are already wrestling with this issue and meet them there. Short video series, digital displays, aligned newsletters, and table tents can all engage students effectively with minimal effort on their part and ours. Doing this well requires genuine empathy, both cognitive and emotional, understanding what students are thinking, what they are feeling, and when the content will actually land.

This campus launched last April and May. Less than a year later, they were sitting together naming possibilities they had not yet imagined. If you want to see those same insights and possibilities on your campus, you could be only a year away. Your students deserve an experience that is intentional, clear, aligned, and integrated. If you would like help launching your curricular approach, I would be glad to talk.
