Capacity before Capabilities

Higher education leaders are facing unprecedented challenges right now. The work feels more VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) than ever. And when it does, two familiar temptations surface: argue with it or wait it out and hope that in six months things settle back to something recognizable.

I don’t think they will. I think the complexity and ambiguity are here to stay and will only escalate.

When that reality sets in, leaders often start wondering whether they’re in the wrong context, the wrong institution, the wrong state, the wrong leadership team. More often, underneath all of that is a quieter, harder question: Maybe I’m not cut out for this.

Many leaders know what it means to pour from an empty cup. Depleted, overwhelmed, burned out, and still needing to show up with compassion and presence for the people around them.

But here’s something I’ve noticed: the opposite is often true as well.

We’re also frequently asked to pour into a cup that’s already full. Another training. Another initiative. Another process. Our cognitive capacity is already maxed out, and now there’s one more thing to learn, implement, or lead through.

At Evolve, we start by focusing on capacity before capability. Not so leaders can do more, but so they can be more and lead with greater clarity, compassion, and courage. Pouring more into an already full cup doesn’t help anyone.

Once that capacity is built, we work on capabilities. We off mindsets, approaches, strategies, and tools to help leaders be effective, efficient, and sustainable at the operational, strategic, and visionary levels as well as leading for equity.

If you’re navigating both the empty cup and the full one at the same time, that’s exactly who Evolve was designed for. We want to help you move away from “this place is a mess” or “maybe I’m not cut out for this,” toward the clarity and capability to lead for better tomorrows.

If that resonates, we’d love to talk.
